Spider Lamb Syndrome

This also as hereditary chondrodysplasia referred condition is a recessive hereditary disease that affects Suffolk and Hampshire lambs. It is characterized by skeletal deformities; bent and splayed legs that are unusually long are most obvious. Afflicted animals are unable to walk and need to be euthanized due to animal welfare reasons. Although carrier animals (NS) are not affected, they can pass on the defect to their offspring: Mathematically, a quarter of the offspring from both carrier parents will become sick (SS). Even breeding of a carrier with a healthy partner will generate 50 % NS carriers. The best way to keep your black-faced flock healthy is to use genetically healthy sheep for breeding. Our SLS test will help you with that at a low cost.
